ENVIRONMENT & EDUCATION
The Blackwater Fair is proud of its long standing basic principles:
Solar Powered workshop, lighting and running rides
Ethically Sourced and Hand Made Prizes
Family run and independant
ZERO PLASTIC TAT
Our workshop is completely solar powered meaning we never have to use fossil fuel technology when building and maintaining our games, rides and running our yard.
Education is best served with an element of fun. We offer the fun side in abundance - whilst not coconut shying away (see what I did there) from vital issues affecting our world today. We have our hearts strongly in sustainability, our Aquacarium game being elementary in providing all the above!
We have undertaken not for profit River Cleans and offered educational content to local schools, groups and successfully campaigned against waterway Fly Tipping in our locality. There are plans for many other artistic and environmental projects in the future.

CULTURAL HERITAGE
Showmen consider themselves a separate identity to Irish, Roma and Gypsy ethnic communities. Showmen are brought together through generations of family business within the fairground world.
Fairgrounds bring generations of people together still today - our great grandparents went to fairs, as did our grandparents, and parents.. and all of whom will take their children to fairs in turn themselves, sharing the nostalgia in experiences they had as children themselves.
Showmen are responsible for many of the initial inventions which have sparked much of the modern entertainment and engineering feats we see today. Ideas which started out in novelty have become firmly entrenched into modern day entertainment; Cinema, for instance, originated from the early moving pictures, or “bioscopes” - which were invented at first, as entertaining novelty for the the public - by Showmen.
We would like to impress upon the fairground customers of today the cultural heritage that has come before to allow this to continue today for the enjoyment of everyone. We have heard fairground enjoyment being described as unpretentious, inclusive and uninhibited - and that this still remains today.
LEGACY
The Blackwater Fair has always had its core in low environmental impact and its aims to be entirely self sufficient during the build, maintenance and onsite, and will hopefully outlast its current owners in longevity. It needs to preserve the Cultural Heritage traditionally associated by Showfolks, and incorporate sustainable practices within this. Education of our younger apprentices, guests and clients in these principals are paramount.
The importance of this legacy cannot be emphasised enough: In this ever changing world, it has been tough to hold onto these values.. when it’s cheaper and more convenient to run an enterprise using environmentally questionable means.. but not succumbing, and sticking by principles in achieving this goal - we will hopefully provide a suitable legacy for the future.
